/ The first 24 hours

Leave your bandage on for the time your artist specified — typically 2 to 24 hours. When you remove it, wash your hands, then gently clean the tattoo with lukewarm water and unscented antibacterial soap. Pat dry with a clean paper towel.

/ Days 2 – 14

Wash twice a day with lukewarm water and unscented soap. Apply a thin layer of an unscented healing balm or moisturizer 2 – 3 times daily. The skin will begin to flake and itch — this is normal. Do not scratch, pick, or peel.

/ Avoid

  • Direct sunlight and tanning beds (for at least 4 weeks)
  • Soaking — no baths, swimming pools, hot tubs, or open water (for 2 weeks)
  • Tight or rough clothing over the area
  • Heavy sweating and intense exercise (for the first week)
  • Scented lotions, perfumes, or alcohol on the area

/ Long-term

Once fully healed, sunscreen is your tattoo's best friend. UV exposure is the single biggest cause of tattoo fading. Use SPF 30+ on any exposed work whenever you're in the sun.
